Nestled in the picturesque town of Biei in Hokkaido, the “Blue Pond” has captivated countless visitors with its ethereal beauty. Its fame skyrocketed when it was featured as a computer wallpaper, marking it as a must-visit destination for many.
Photo Description – A Hazy Reflection Amidst the Greens
On a cloudy afternoon in early August, I stood before this iconic pond. While the sky was overcast, the muted white of the clouds made the pond’s unique blue hue stand out even more. On this day, with only a slight ripple on the water’s surface, the surrounding trees reflected in the pond, albeit in a slightly blurred manner, adding to the pond’s mystique.
Story Behind the Photo – Nature’s Mysterious Canvas
The distinct color of the Blue Pond is attributed to a mix of natural elements. It’s believed that the waters of the Biei River, combined with sulfuric streams containing aluminum, reflect light in a way that gives the pond its enchanting blue hue. On the day of my visit, the pond showcased a shade of light blue, a testament to its ever-changing palette.
The pond’s origin traces back to disaster prevention activities related to Mount Tokachi. Water accumulated behind a dam, and over time, the combination of the dead karamatsu trees and the pond’s blue color created a surreal landscape. This led to its popular moniker, the “Blue Pond.”
From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Capturing the Magic
Given the pond’s popularity, finding a spot to set up my camera was challenging. Experimenting with different framings and apertures, one shot stood out among the few I took. By narrowing the aperture, I was able to capture not just the allure of the Blue Pond but also the varying shades of green of the beautiful trees surrounding it. While the weather wasn’t ideal, this particular shot encapsulated the essence of the Blue Pond and its verdant surroundings.
