Kesennuma’s Revival: A View from Mt. Anba

jsqwebmaster, 06/08/202406/07/2024

Under June’s gentle afternoon light,
Kesennuma Bay comes into sight,
Bridges span, the port’s embrace,
A city’s revival, a resilient place.

Photo Description – The Revitalized Kesennuma Bay

This photograph captures the sweeping view of Kesennuma Bay and the renowned Kesennuma fishing port from the vantage point of Mt. Anba in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture. In the distance, Oshima Island and the connecting Kesennuma Oshima Bridge and Kesennuma Bay Crossing Bridge are visible. The scene reflects the ongoing recovery and resilience of Kesennuma after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Story Behind the Photo – Witnessing Kesennuma’s Recovery

On an early June afternoon, I photographed Kesennuma Bay and its surroundings from Mt. Anba. The view included the bustling Kesennuma fishing port, one of Japan’s premier fishing harbors. Thirteen years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, reminders of the disaster remain, yet signs of recovery are evident throughout the city. Though I only knew the earthquake’s impact from the news, visiting Kesennuma revealed its progress in rebuilding. Despite being over 100 kilometers from Sendai, the journey is worthwhile for the beautiful scenery and delicious food. I highly recommend a visit to experience Kesennuma’s charm and resilience.

From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Capturing Revival and Resilience

The aim of this photograph was to capture the contrast between the reminders of the past and the signs of recovery in Kesennuma. Framing the bay with its bridges and bustling port, while balancing the exposure to highlight both the natural and constructed elements, was key. This image seeks to evoke a sense of resilience and hope, reflecting Kesennuma’s journey of recovery.
