Roses and Relics: Capturing the Hikawa Maru at Yamashita Park

jsqwebmaster, 12/05/202306/08/2024

In late November, just after noon in Yokohama’s Yamashita Park, I captured a harmonious blend of nature and history. Amidst the lush green leaves, the vivid pink of blooming roses stood out, with the gently blurred background featuring the iconic white and red chimney of the Hikawa Maru.

Photo Description – A Symphony of Color and History
The photograph highlights the striking contrast between the bright pink roses and the deep green foliage, with the Hikawa Maru’s chimney subtly present in the background. The blue autumn sky provides a perfect backdrop, complementing the scene with its serenity.

Story Behind the Photo – A Stroll Through Yamashita Park
While photographing the famous ginkgo avenue of Yamashita Park Street, I took a detour into the park for a change of scenery. The vibrant pink roses immediately caught my eye. I decided to include the Hikawa Maru’s chimney in the frame, aiming to capture both the beauty of the roses and the symbol of Yokohama’s maritime history.

From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Balancing Focus and Context
My challenge was to maintain the focus on the roses while subtly highlighting the Hikawa Maru. Using a macro lens, I carefully adjusted my distance and aperture to f/11 to achieve a soft background blur that still clearly indicated the presence of the ship. This technique successfully conveyed the vivid pink and rich green colors, while gently asserting the ship’s presence.
