On an overcast afternoon in early August, I found myself in Biei, Hokkaido, aiming my lens at the iconic “Seven Stars Tree” amidst the town’s renowned patchwork hills.

The patchwork hills of Biei are even more expansive than what the photograph suggests. I drove around, searching for the perfect vantage point, and while there were numerous picturesque spots, the classic view from the Seven Stars Tree location was undeniably captivating. Although I had high hopes for clear skies typical of Hokkaido’s summer, the weather was not on my side during this visit. Days of clouds and rain persisted, denying me the chance to shoot under a bright blue sky. But nature is unpredictable, and there’s no controlling the elements.
From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Embracing the Overcast
While I had hoped for the vibrant contrast of a sunny day, the overcast conditions presented a unique opportunity. The muted sky allowed the colors of the patchwork fields to stand out, creating a serene and moody atmosphere. The absence of harsh shadows and the soft, diffused light enhanced the natural beauty of Biei’s landscape. The silver lining? I now have a compelling reason to return and capture the hills under a different sky.
