Oyama Afuri Shrine: A Glimpse into Nature’s Embrace and Japan’s Spiritual Heart

jsqwebmaster, 10/17/202304/04/2024

In the heart of Kanagawa’s Isehara city, the Oyama Afuri Shrine stands as a testament to Japan’s profound connection with nature and tradition. Captured just before noon in mid-October, this photograph paints a vivid picture of the shrine’s “Shimosha” (lower precincts), nestled amidst the lush greenery of Mount Oyama, with two trekkers embarking on their journey, embodying the spirit of exploration and reverence.

Photo Description – A Harmony of Man, Nature, and Spirituality

The photograph showcases the Oyama Afuri Shrine’s Shimosha, a place deeply revered by generations. The vibrant red and white hues of the main hall resonate with the weight of history and devotion. The stone-paved pathway, stone lanterns, and the iconic torii gates encapsulate the essence of Japanese tradition and culture. In the foreground, two trekkers mark the beginning of their ascent to Mount Oyama’s peak, adding a touch of modern-day adventure to this timeless setting.

Story Behind the Photo – A Quest for Serenity and Grandeur

On this particular day, time was not on my side, restricting my visit to the shrine’s Shimosha. Yet, Mount Oyama holds a vantage point named “Fujimi-dai,” from where, on clear days, one can behold the majestic Mount Fuji in all its glory. As autumn deepens, with Mount Fuji cloaked in snow, it’s said to be the ideal season to relish this breathtaking view. With a heart full of anticipation, I yearn for my next trekking adventure on a sunny day, hoping to capture the unparalleled beauty of Mount Fuji from Oyama.

From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Capturing Emotion in a Frame

Deciding how to photograph the Oyama Afuri Shrine’s Shimosha was a significant challenge for me. I could have chosen to capture just the shrine, but I felt that wouldn’t fully convey the emotions and atmosphere I experienced at that moment. Then, I noticed two trekkers walking by my side. Their presence seemed to perfectly encapsulate the feelings and ambiance I wanted to convey, mirroring my own desire to visit Fujimi-dai. Thus, I decided to include them in the shot alongside the shrine. This photograph became a frame that encapsulated my emotions and thoughts of that moment.
