Niji-no-Matsubara’s Embrace: The Verdant Stretch Viewed from Kagamiyama Observatory

jsqwebmaster, 10/14/202304/04/2024

From the Kagamiyama Observatory in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, I captured the Niji-no-Matsubara pine grove, set against a typically overcast winter sky over the Sea of Japan, with just a hint of blue peeking through.

Photo Description – An Arc of Nature’s Beauty

Stretching along Karatsu Bay, Niji-no-Matsubara forms an arc reminiscent of a rainbow. This pine grove, initiated by the first lord of Karatsu Clan, Terazawa Hirohisa, spans approximately 4.5km in length and 500m in width, boasting around a million pine trees. In the distance, the silhouette of Karatsu Castle subtly makes its presence known.

Story Behind the Photo – Capturing the Essence

While the winter weather along the Sea of Japan was mostly cloudy, occasional bursts of sunlight pierced through, casting momentary warmth onto Niji-no-Matsubara and the patchwork-like rice fields below. My aim was to frame the faint blue of the sky, the vast expanse of Niji-no-Matsubara, and the distant silhouette of Karatsu Castle in a single shot.

From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Lens Choice

Despite having a 28mm lens on hand, I deliberately chose to use a 50mm standard lens for this shot. I wanted to capture the distant view of Karatsu Castle as if peering intently at the horizon. This choice paid off, with the castle subtly present in the photo frame. Using the 50mm lens added depth to the photo, emphasizing the intricate details within.
