As the autumn sun set, casting the sky in a deep blue hue, the Dogo Onsen Honkan in Matsuyama, Ehime, transformed into a radiant spectacle, its lights illuminating the historic structure’s intricate details.
Photo Description – A Moment Before the Bustle
The photograph captures Dogo Onsen Honkan at a unique moment, just before it welcomes its evening visitors. The combination of gunmetal roof tiles, rich wooden brown, and light cream plaster evokes a deep sense of history, further accentuated by the building’s glowing lights.
Story Behind the Photo – A Brief Respite
After checking into our hotel, we ventured into the bustling streets of Dogo Onsen in search of an early dinner. It was during this brief quiet moment, before the influx of evening bathers, that I managed to capture the Honkan in its serene glory. The Honkan, a symbol of Japan’s oldest hot spring, Dogo Onsen, still operates as an active bathhouse. The current three-story wooden structure, dating back to 1894, has undergone several renovations to achieve its present form. Although we didn’t partake in the baths that day, just being there made us feel the long-standing love and reverence for Dogo Onsen.
From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – Capturing the Dusk
Shooting post-sunset without a flash posed its challenges. I had to fully open my bright lens, be mindful of the passing crowd, and ensure no camera shake. The contrast between the deep blue sky and the illuminated building made this shot a vivid reminder of our visit.
