Kurushima Strait by Day: Where Calm Waters Reflect History

jsqwebmaster, 09/23/202304/05/2024

In the warm light of an early November afternoon, the Kurushima Strait in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, presents a serene vista, with the gentle waters of the Seto Inland Sea reflecting the sky and the graceful span of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge stretching above.

Photo Description – Seto’s Gentle Waters

This photograph, taken from Oshima in Imabari City, captures the gentle stillness of the Kurushima Strait beneath the clear, warm afternoon skies. The iconic bridge, a marvel of modern engineering, offers a stark yet harmonious contrast to the timeless waters below.

Story Behind the Photo – Echoes from the Past

Walking around the tranquil surroundings of the Kurushima Strait, one can’t help but think of the historical significance of this region. The strait and its surrounding waters once played host to the strategic maritime activities of the Murakami Navy during the Sengoku period. Today’s tranquil scenes belie the vibrant history of naval maneuvers, skirmishes, and the importance of the Seto Inland Sea as a crucial waterway. Not far from the strait, local eateries offer fresh seafood selections, allowing travelers to savor delicacies like the filefish, an essence of the Seto Inland Sea.

From an Amateur Photographer’s Perspective – A Desire for a More Leisurely Exploration

Driving across the Shimanami Kaido limited my choice of shooting locations, but the trip kindled a desire to explore more. The allure of the landscape and the region’s rich history inspire plans for a more leisurely exploration by bicycle next time.
